How to Solve the Puzzle

To solve the puzzle, create a 5-position grid on a piece of paper or in spreadsheet software. First, attempt to establish a house order by nationalities. The following clues should be used firstly to establish the house order:

The rattan house's owner drinks Scotch.
The person living in the center house drinks whiskey. (Therefore, the rattan house is NOT in the center)
The rattan house is on the left of the straw house.
The Brazilian lives in the first house.
The Brazilian lives next to the mud house.
The American lives in the brick house.

We know after analysis of these clues, that the 2nd house is mud, the 4th house is rattan, the 5th house is straw, and that the Canadian OR the Jamaican are in either the 2nd or 5th positions.

The clue: "The Jamaican drinks rum", and the vital clue: "The person who smokes Bolivars has a neighbor who drinks Kava" reveals the Jamaican to be the Bolivar smoker, and by elimination, the Brazilian to be the Kava drinker - which should complete the beverage assignment.

The remainder of the puzzle should now fall into place by further elimination. Clues such as: "The owner of the wood house smokes Punch cigars", and "The Cuban smokes Cohibas" can be used to fill in grid positions as needed during the process.

The clue: "The person who smokes Romeos drinks beer" will complete the remainder of the cigar brands, since we know at this point who all the beverage drinkers are.

The next clues will fill in some of the crop assignments: "The person who grows cane lives next to the one who smokes Punch cigars", "The Canadian grows roses as an occupation", and "The person who smokes Montecristo cigars grows cotton".

And finally, the clue: "The person who smokes Bolivars lives next to the one who grows coffee" reveals the last crop-growing assignment and completes the grid.

So, we see the Cuban grows tobacco and the American smokes Montecristos.

Jason wins a great CD entitled Cigar Music - Tobacco Songs of Old Havana by various legendary Cuban musicians.
