Birth of a Cigar
The Art of Cigar Rolling
In July 2001, CubanBest hosted a series of cigar hand-rolling demonstrations in Gastown, Vancouver. As a result, Master cigar handroller Bladex Rodriguez of the Partagas factory, Cuba, has left us with a pictorial walk-through of his craft.

First, various types of filler leaves are selected according to the blending formula of the manufacturer (in this case, Cohiba). The blend is based on a number of factors such as vintage, region, and tobacco leaf variety and type, carefully tested according to numerous criteria.
Here Bladex bunches filler tobacco leaves, selected according to complex blending formulae.
Next, he performs the preliminary roll using several layers of binder grade tobacco leaf.

Finally, the precious wrapper grade leaf is used as the outer wrap. The finish must be perfect, and will ultimately depend on the quality of the preliminary roll.
|
Lastly, the cap is constructed with a form cut from the outer wrapper.
