Hoyo de Monterrey is another famous name in Cuban cigars. Established by José Gener (who was a tobacco grower before he registered his mark in 1865), the name roughly means "valley of Monterrey", a particularly fertile site in the Vuelta Abajo, which had been farmed by Gener since at least 1860. The brand offers lighter flavoured / medium bodied cigars and a wide range of sizes, the largest of which are much celebrated. The Le Hoyo series was introduced about 1970 and presents a stronger, full bodied flavour. For a real treat, try the Hoyo de Monterrey double corona or the Le Hoyo Epicure II.
Although it kept its traditional packaging, this mark has undergone deep changes. Hoyo de Monterey cigars are the best of the "new generation" cigars, with great draw, excellent burning properties, balanced fragrance and flavor, and no excess of light (lager) tobacco in the blend. Many sizes are packed in special sliding cases.
